From soluço, or from Old Galician-Portuguese solluçar, from Vulgar Latin *suggluttiāre, from singultō (to gasp, to hiccup) (with the prefix sub- and altered by influence from gluttiō (to swallow)), from Latin singultus.

Compare Galician saloucar, Spanish sollozar, Romanian sughița, also Italian singhiozzare.
