Uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Slavic *stydnǫti or related to Lithuanian stū́gti (to harden, to stiffen). Cognate with Russian сты́нуть (stýnutʹ), Belarusian сты́гнуць (stýhnucʹ), Polish stygnąć.
