Etymology 1

Cognate with Tocharian B yasā (“gold”), from Proto-Tocharian *wi̯äsā (“gold”), of uncertain further origin. Compare Proto-Italic *auzom (“gold”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂é-h₂us-o- (“glow”), from the root *h₂ews- (“to dawn, become light, become red”).
