Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Latin vespa, either through a Vulgar Latin intermediate form *vespis, or more likely remade from the plural of the original singular Romanian form, viaspă, veaspă, now rare, archaic, or regional, e.g. in Moldavia. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wobʰseh₂ (wasp), from *webʰ- (weave).
