From a Vulgar Latin variant of Latin bilanx. Compare Italian bilancia.

valanza f (plural valanzi)

  1. balance, scales (device for weighing)
    La valanza nun canusci diffirenzi tra l'oru e lu chiummu.
    The scales don't differentiate gold from lead.
  2. (fishing) a type of fishing net. (Is there an English equivalent to this definition?)
