From Ottoman Turkish تپه (tepe, “crown of the head, apex, summit, mountain peak, hill”), from Proto-Turkic *tepe (“hill, top; top of head”). Cognate with Old Turkic 𐱅𐰇𐰯𐰇 (töpü, “height”), Old Uyghur [script needed] (töpü, “top of head”), Karakhanid [script needed] (töpü, “summit of a mountain, hill, crown of a head”), Yakut төбө (töbö, “top, summit”).
