Etymology[edit]
tänä (singular essive form of tämä) + suffix -än, for which multiple explanations exist:[1]
- a reduction of -pänä (tänäpänä), a dialectal word which would be cognate with Karelian tänäpäi, Ludian tänäpäi, Veps t'äńämbäi, Votic tänäpõin, tänäpä; and Livonian täm'põ and originally a contraction of tänä päivänä (“on this day”).
- reduced form of the instructive suffix -in, based on dialectal forms such as tänäin
- third-person possessive suffix
- illative suffix
Compare Estonian täna, Udmurt туннэ (tunne, “today”) and Kamassian ҭейнен (“today”).
