Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Finnic *soomu, from Proto-Uralic *śëme. Cognates include Estonian soomus, Veps somuz, Erzya сяв (śav), Udmurt сьӧм (śöm) and Komi-Permyak сьӧм (śöm).
