Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Tai *sɤmᶜ (sour). Cognate with Thai ส้ม (sôm), Lao ສົ້ມ (som), Shan သူမ်ႈ (sūum), ᦉᦳᧄᧉ (ṡum²), Ahom 𑜏𑜤𑜪 (suṃ). Compare Middle Chinese (MC swan, “sour”) and Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qaləsəm (whence Malay asam and Toba Batak asom).
