From Proto-Slavic *sъnědati, from *sъ(n)- + *ěd-, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱom- + *h₁ed-. Cognate with Upper Sorbian snědać, Polish śniadać, Czech snídat, and Ukrainian снідати (snidaty).
