Etymology[edit]
From Middle Low German schȫke, from Proto-Germanic *skōkijō, cognate with Dutch scheuk (Swedish sköka and Old Norse skœkja are also borrowed from Low German). Perhaps related to the verb *skakaną (“to shake”).
