Borrowed from Latin sēsamum, from Ancient Greek σήσαμον (sḗsamon), from Old Aramaic שושמא (šūššmā), shortening of שומשומא (šumššumā), from Akkadian 𒃻𒈦𒌑𒈬 (/⁠šamaššammū⁠/), 𒊭𒈦𒌑𒈨 (/⁠šamaššammi⁠/, literally oil plant). See English sesame for more information.
