From Proto-Vietic *ruh, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ruh ~ *ruuh ~ *ruəh ~ *rəh ~ *rah ~ *raah ~ *rih ~ *rus ~ *ruəs ~ *rəs ~ *rəəs ~ *raas ~ *ris ~ *ruʔ ~ *ruəʔ ~ *raʔ (to fall, be shed); cognate with Bahnar ruh, Khmer រុះ (ruh), Mon ပြဟ် (proh), Temiar roh (to fall (of leaves)).
