Inherited from Old French regulisse, ricolisse, metathesized form of licoresse (whence English licorice, liquorice), from Late Latin liquiritia, alteration of Ancient Greek γλυκύρριζα (glukúrrhiza): γλυκύς (glukús, sweet) + ῥίζα (rhíza, root).
