From English polytechnic, from French polytechnique, from the École polytechnique, engineering school founded 1794 in Paris, from Greek πολύτεχνος (polýtechnos, “skilled in many arts”)," from πολύς "many" (see poly-) + τέχνη "art" (see technic).
