From Old Galician-Portuguese ordennar, from Vulgar Latin *ōrdiniāre, itself from Latin ōrdināre (or through a *ōrdinium), from ōrdō (order, arrangement), from Proto-Italic *ored(h)- (to arrange), of unknown origin. Compare Spanish ordeñar. Doublet of ordenar.
