Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *meilas (compare Latvian mīls (“nice, sweet, dear, cherished, beloved”), Old Prussian mijls (“sweet, dear”), and Proto-Slavic *mìlъ (“soft, mild, gentle, agreeable, pleasant, sweet, dear”)), from Proto-Indo-European *meyh₁- (“soft, tender”). Cognate with Latin mītis (“weak, tender, soft”).[1]
