Inherited from Ottoman Turkish مرتبه (mertebe, a step, stair, a point of degree, rank, grade),[1] from Arabic مَرْتَبَة (martaba, step, rank, degree), verbal noun of رَتَبَ (rataba, to be firm, to stand unmoved).[2]
