Maltese[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Probably from underlying *mal-ajr (“with the air”), the latter word being a variant of arja that goes back to Sicilian airu (alongside aira, aria), from Latin aer (“air”). Aquilina’s suggestion to derive it from Arabic مُلامِل (mulāmil, “quick, swift”, of a mount) seems less likely.
