From German Kren and Yiddish כריין (khreyn), both ultimately from Proto-Slavic *xrěnъ (horseradish). Compare Russian хрен (xren), Polish chrzan, Czech křen, Ukrainian хрін (xrin), Romanian hrean, Italian cren, Lithuanian kriẽnas.
