Borrowed from Old East Slavic колпакъ (kolpakŭ), from Ottoman Turkish قلپاق (Turkish kalpak), from Proto-Turkic or from Middle Persian kwlʾp̄k' (kulāfak, little cap; calyx), diminutive of kwlʾp̄ (kulāf, cap, bonnet), (Persian کلاهک (kolâhak), diminutive of کلاه (kolâh, hat)), or from Common Turkic *kalpak.
