Inherited from Old Spanish xarabe (compare Ladino sharope, Portuguese xarope, Catalan xarop), from Andalusian Arabic شَرَاب, from Classical Arabic شَرَاب (šarāb, a drink, beverage, wine, coffee, syrup). Compare English sharab, syrup.
