Etymology[edit]

From New Latin hypochondrium, from Ancient Greek ὑποχόνδριον (hupokhóndrion, the soft part of the body below the cartilage and above the navel), from ὑπό (hupó, below) + χόνδρος (khóndros, cartilage).
