Etymology

[edit]

Numerous derivations have been proposed, including:

  1. from a Vulgar Latin *exiacicāre, from *iacium (bed, bedding), from Latin iaceō (to lie);
  2. from an Andalusian Arabic form of Arabic تَشَكَّى (tašakkā), frequentive/intensive of شَكَا (šakā, to complain) (source of xacra);
  3. from Latin īnstīgāre (to incite, to urge) (source of instigar);
  4. from a Vulgar Latin *indeāgāre, alteration of indāgō (to track, to hunt) (source of indagar).

Cognate with Catalan engegar.
