From Malay empedu, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qapəju, from Proto-Austronesian *qapəjux. Compare Javanese peru.

- bile: a bitter brownish-yellow or greenish-yellow secretion produced by the liver, stored in the gall bladder, and discharged into the duodenum where it aids the process of digestion.
- gall bladder: a pear-shaped organ that stores bile from the liver, until the body needs it for the digestion and absorption of fats in the duodenum.
- (figurative) sharp tongue: the practice or characteristic of speaking to others in a harsh, critical, or insulting manner.
