Etymology

Borrowed from Old Occitan empaitar, empachar, from Vulgar Latin *impāctāre, from impāctum, perfect passive participle of Latin impingō (to drive, force). Alternatively, from Latin impedicāre (to fetter, entangle), in which case it is a doublet of empatxar.
