From Old Occitan ambayssada, derivative of ambaissa (service), from Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌱𐌰𐌷𐍄𐌹 (andbahti, service, function), from Proto-Germanic *andbahtiją (service, office), derivative of Proto-Germanic *ambahtaz (servant), from Gaulish *ambactos (servant), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂m̥bʰi (round about, around) + Proto-Indo-European *h₂eǵ- (to drive).
