From Proto-Austronesian *di-ni (“here”). The latter half of the word is possibly related to iri/ire/idi. See also ganiri and other Tagalog demonstrative pronouns. Meanwhile, the former half is possibly related to Malay di and Indonesian di as a likely cognate. Compare Cebuano dinhi, Tausug dī, and Malay sini.
