Etymology[edit]
Previously coûtume, from Middle French coustume, from a Vulgar Latin *cōnsuētūmen or *costūmen, from Latin cōnsuētūdinem (“custom, habit”), from cōnsuēscō (“accustom, habituate”). Doublet of costume and consuétude. Cognate with Spanish costumbre, Catalan costum.
