Inherited from Old Czech chudý, from Proto-Slavic *xudъ (bad). Cognate with Lower Sorbian chudy, Upper Sorbian chudy (poor), Polish chudy (thin, lean), Old Church Slavonic хоудъ (xudŭ), and Russian худо́й (xudój).
