Etymology[edit]
Ultimately from Telugu పందికొక్కు (pandikokku), from పంది (pandi, “pig, boar”) + కొక్కు (kokku, “bandicoot”); first used of the Asian murids, thence applied to the Australian marsupials which bear some resemblance.
