From Old Swedish aptan, aftan, afton, from Old Norse aptann, from Proto-Germanic *ēbanþs, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁epi. Cognates include Norwegian Nynorsk aftan, Norwegian Bokmål aften, Danish aften, Icelandic aftann, English even (evening), Dutch avond and German Abend.
