First attested in 1370. From Andalusian Arabic السبج (az-zabáǧ), from Arabic سَبَج (sabaj, “jet, obsidian”), from Middle Persian špk' (/šabag/, “jet, obsidian”), from šp (/šab/, “night”), from Proto-Indo-European *kʷsep- (“night”).
