Etymology 2

[edit]

The city is called 永市 (Vĩnh thị) in Đại Nam nhất thống chí and 永城庯 (Vĩnh thành phố) in the Đại Nam thực lục. The occurrence of (SV: vĩnh) as the city name in these adminstrative/official documents is obviously just another case of the common practice of phonetic matching to form a new tên chữ from the original tên Nôm and is of little actual etymological value.

In the past, this place was known by many names: Kẻ Vang, Kẻ Vịnh, Kẻ Vinh, Kẻ Vĩnh, Vinh Giang, Vinh Doanh.
