@Equinox: French has the equivalent expression ouvrir le bal, but bal means "dance" (ball etymology 2), not "solid or hollow sphere" (ball etymology 1; that would be balle). Could the etymology be wrong? Canonicalization (talk) 16:49, 6 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Yeah it already says dance. Funny, I can't remember creating this, don't know where I heard it, and wouldn't have known what it meant if I saw it. I'll find a citation. Equinox 16:57, 6 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
