Burg may be of Arabi origin: Borj (برج) which means a building with turrets. It can mean a fortified small town.— This unsigned comment was added by 160.178.100.161 (talk).
- The timing looks wrong. Proto-Germanic *burgz looks thoroughly plausible, and Gothic 𐌱𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌲𐍃 (baurgs) seems like it should date to before any substantial contact between Arabs and Europeans. My guess is that the Arabic and the Proto-Germanic are both ultimately from the same original source, which may be Proto-Indo-European *bʰerǵʰ-, but tracing the path of vocabulary which is of a type so susceptible to borrowing and which goes back so far is quite problematic.
