Pronunciation?[edit]

The Wiktionary article gives /ˈbɛd.wɪn/. The corresponding Wikipedia article gives /ˈbɛduɪn/. The Oxford English Dictionary gives /ˈbɛduːɪn/. What should a poor foreigner understand? Imerologul (talk) 19:55, 9 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Etymology seems incorrect[edit]

"From Old French beduin (compare French bédouin), from Arabic بَدَوِين (badawīn), colloquial plural of بَدَوِيّ‎ (badawiyy), from بَدْو‎ (badw, “desert, camp”)."

First note: what is the source of "badw" meaning "desert" or "camp"? "badw" is the collective noun of "badawiyy", and refers to nomads. A desert is sometimes called a "bādiyah".

Second note: where is "badawīn" used colloquially instead of "badw"? This is not a plural that I've heard, nor is it a common form in Arabic. I suspect it's incorrect and it's actually بدويين "badawiyyīn", the regular plural form of "badawiyy". 2A02:CB80:4077:CFC9:F:5953:9B92:869E 15:56, 19 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
