Synonym of African American Vernacular English[edit]
Is it though? Not in the UK it isn't. Isn't this actually just black + English, where hopefully we already have a sense of this. Compare Asian English or Oriental English, etc. Mglovesfun (talk) 11:26, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
- Agreed. It's bad if it does mean this, since it completely disregards any number of non-American black Englishes, in Africa, the Caribbean, etc. Equinox ◑ 16:56, 11 March 2017 (UTC)
- Update: someone's just added MLE. But the question is still open as to whether this is just an SoP term for any variety spoken mostly by black people. Equinox ◑ 22:32, 14 July 2019 (UTC)
- It is used as something of a term of art in sociolinguistics. There are various Black English varieties, but not all Black people speak any such variety, and not all speakers of such varieties are Black. I've just added two quotations of (non-American, non-UK) uses. Cnilep (talk) 02:45, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
