جَاءَنِي هُوَ نَفْسُهُ

HI, I'd like to know whether هو is optional. If so, it could be stated by addig parentheses (هو). Also, if هُوَ نَفْسُهُ can by substituted by بِنَفْسِهِ, it could be added to show an alternative phrasing of the same sentence. Thanks in advance.
