From Proto-Indo-European *ǵyewh₁- (compare Latin gingīva (“gums”), Tocharian B śuwaṃ (“to eat”), Polish żuć (“to chew”), Persian جویدن (javidan), Pashto [script needed] (žovạl, “to bite, gnaw”)).
