From Proto-Indo-European *ḱewbh₂-, *(s)kub-, *(s)ḱub- (shoulder, thigh), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kew-, *(s)ḱew- (to bend, arch, bow). Cognate with Latin cubitus (elbow, bend, arch), Latin cubō (lie down, recline).
