From Proto-Indo-European *str̥h₃tós, From Proto-Indo-European *sterh₃- (“to spread, extend, stretch out”). Cognate with Latin strātus, Sanskrit स्तृत (stṛtá) and Ancient Greek στρᾰτός (stratós).
