Via early modern Dutch [Term?] from Middle Dutch loterye, which is derived from the cognate of German Los (lot). The word originates from the bilingual contact zones of Flanders and may be a Frenchified form of earlier Middle Dutch lotinghe (German Losung). Compare contemporary Dutch loterij, French loterie.
