Etymology[edit]
From Classical Malay كستيل (Kastila, “Castile, Castilian, Spaniard”), from Portuguese Castela (“Castile”), from Latin castella (“little forts, castles”), plural diminutive of castrum (“fort”). Also possibly from Arabic قَشْتَالَة (qaštāla, “Castille”) or Arabic قَسَاطِلَة (qasāṭila, “Castilians”), as in Arabic بِلَاد الْقَسَاطِلَة (bilād al-qasāṭila, “the country of Castilians”). Cognate with Cebuano Katsila, Maranao Kastila, Maguindanao Kastila, and Tausug Kastila'. Doublet of Kastilya.
