Etymology

From Middle High German īwe, from Old High German īwa, from Proto-Germanic *īwō, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁eyHw-. Cognate with dated Dutch ijf, English yew, Lithuanian ievà, Russian ива (iva). Middle High German postvocalic -w- was normally lost. It has been preserved in ewig, Löwe, and with secondary hardening to -b- in Eibe and Hieb.
