The "mesopontic" geographic region of land which lies between the Black and Caspian Seas, consisting of both the North Caucasus Region and Transcaucasia, and traversed by the Caucasus Mountains; the northern boundary of this region is roughly on a line extending from the Don to the Volga River deltas, and the southern boundary generally coincident with the lower course of the Aras River.
