Inherited from Ottoman Turkish براق (burāḳ, the flashing steed, name of the courser that carried Muhammed, in his night-journey (معراج (miʿrāc)) from Mekka to Jerusalem, and thence to Heaven, in an instant),[1][2] from Arabic البُرَاق (al-burāq).
