German[edit]
Pronunciation[edit]
Proper noun[edit]
Allerseelen n (proper noun, strong, genitive Allerseelen, plural Allerseelen)
- (especially Roman Catholicism) All Souls' Day
Usage notes[edit]
- The holiday is not kept by Protestants in Germany, who instead remember the dead on Totensonntag (Sunday before Advent Sunday).
- The genitive and plural are widely avoided. The genitive could only be used at all with an adjective: des letzten Allerseelen (“of the last All Souls' Day”).
