Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Germanic *warmijanΔ…. In the sense of "cherish", possibly a semantic loan from Koine Greek θάλπω (thΓ‘lpō, β€œto warm, to care for, to cherish”). May be distantly related to Koine Greek θΡρμαίνω (thermaΓnō, β€œto warm, heat”), which it otherwise translates.
