Inherited from Middle Korean ᄇᆡᆺ곶 (poyskwoc), first attested in the Hunminjeong'eum haerye (訓民正音解例 / 훈민정음해례)[1], 1446.

Equivalent to (bae, pear) +‎ (kkot, flower).
